Nacel Australia provides international student exchange programs to high schools and school study tour groups

Hosting an overseas student is a wonderful way to bring another part of the world into your own home. It provides the Australian family with the opportunity to observe and hear the story of a young person who is a long way from home and who is keen to experience life in Australia.

The fun, friendship and rewarding educational benefits of hosting an international exchange student can make the experience an unforgettable one. Hosting is a wonderful way to learn more about another country and gain a new perspective on the world. Everyday activities will be more fun when shared with a student who is eager to discover the Australian way of life. Your family will grow as you exchange ideas and compare lifestyles. You'll discover a new way of looking at the world without leaving home !

Hosting an international exchange student can be a very rewarding experience. Another way of life is learnt and lasting friendships are formed. Most students from other countries dream about visiting Australia, and enthusiastically welcome the opportunity to stay with an Australian family.

Nacel students are aged between 14 and 18 years old and come from many different countries all around the world. Their stay in Australia may be for four weeks in July and August or up to a complete school year. Many of our students come from Europe and choose to spend their mid-year summer vacation finding out more about Australia.

Nacel students are:

eager to experience the Australian way of life,

reasonably competent in English language skills,

individually matched to your family's interests,

prepared to assume the responsibilities of daily life,

instructed to bring spending money,

aware that a Nacel homestay is not a tourist excursion,

covered by medical, liability and emergency return insurance,

chaperoned by English language teachers from their own country.

LONG TERM STUDENTS arriving in January, June, July and September

Every year Nacel welcomes students from Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, Japan, Canada and Brazil on term, semester and year programs.

   SHORT TERM GROUPS
Every year Nacel is pleased to welcome a large number of students on a one-month program to Australia. Students from France, Germany, Spain and the USA arrive in July and August. Hosting a short-term student can be a very rewarding experience and it is a wonderful way to learn about another country, culture and language, whilst sharing our own Australian way of life.

Most of the students who come to Australia participate in a short term program of about four weeks. For all or part of their stay, the students attend high school with their host brothers or sisters. Sometimes the visit of a group coincides with a school holiday period in Australia so the visiting students spend some of their time in leisure activities with the host family. Nacel liaises with the schools in order to gain permission for the students to attend. A small number of students stay for a longer period of a school term up to a full year. Long term exchange students participate in the school program just as they would in their home country.

Nacel is interested in families who are flexible and who have a genuine interest in people of other cultures - their language and customs. Host families come from all walks of life. A Nacel host family in Australia provides an overseas teenager with room and board in a warm supportive home. Host families are not paid for hosting but the exchange students bring enough money with them to cover personal spending, outings and incidentals.

Host families are:

warm, welcoming and open-minded,

proud to share the Australian lifestyle and language,

interested in learning about other cultures,

eager to include the student in their family and community,

aware that today's youth need to be world citizens.

Students are met at the airport by host families or at another pre-arranged point. Nacel coordinators organise local transportation and arrange pick-up points. The coordinators, as well as the teacher-chaperones, stay in touch with the students, host families and schools during the students' stay. They are available to answer questions and handle problems should they arise. If problems are insurmountable, Nacel coordinators organise alternative accommodation for the students. The students are covered by a comprehensive medical, liability and emergency return insurance.

To express your interest in hosting an exchange student, print out and complete the Expression Of Interest Form and mail or fax to the Nacel office, or, you can complete the form on-line and click to send. A Nacel coordinator in your state will then phone you to arrange a suitable time to visit during which time you will be asked to complete a Host Family Questionnaire which is used to match the student to your interests and requests. You are then sent the student's profile which includes a photo and letter. Correspondence between family and student can begin, and the excitement of an international friendship is launched ! Nacel also provides a Host Family Handbook.
